STP: Week 4
This week I worked on finishing the skirt. First I cut out the front pieces again since the week before I had cut them too short. I cut them and sewed them together. I then sewed one side all the way down. The other side I had to sew until a certain point because I had to add the zipper.
Adding the zipper was the hardest part because I sewed to close to where it opens and closes so then it wouldn’t zip up. But I unsewed it and did it again. I then added the waist belt and I was done!
The skirt is done but it needs to be altered because its a little big. The shirt is also a little bug so my next steps are to alter them to my size.

STP: Week 3
This week it was time to work on the skirt! I first tried on the top and it fit, just a little loose on the top but it was done! Next step was to figure out a pattern with the muslin for the skirt.
The back was the easiest part. I took the black and white dress I had done last year to have an idea on how to do the pleats. The fabric was cut into two pieces. One was a yard and the other 2 and a half yards. We took the 1 yard and started to do pleats. At first we did them all going one way but I then realized they had to meet in the middle. So it had to be 3 on the left side going in and 3 pleats on the right side going in. Before sewing it all together,it was first pinned. After we made sure they were right, I sewed it together so they could stay in place.

Next we worked on the front. I wanted the front not so puffy, so little to not pleats but I also wanted it to look flattering, and I also wanted a slit. I know, I am very picky!
The front is two pieces, this allows the split to happen cleaning. The other piece is also straight down and has a notch on the right side. The notch makes it a little fitted. One problem that came up was that when I sewed the sides together the front was shorter, way shorter than the back. It was probably the easiest part but because of that mistake and me being the perfectionist that I am, I’m going to redo it.

STP: Week 2
This week I finished the top of the dress! My goal was to finish the top and start the bottom but we had some complications with the sides. We cut the sides and one side was too small. We needed it to be bigger because of the zipper. So we cut another piece, unsewed the part that was too small, and sewed the piece we cut.
Then we had to measure it on me again to make sure it fit this time. After I made sure it fit, I hand-sewed the zipper. I did that because that way I had to know if it fit, and I had to know if it zipped up right without getting caught in the fabric. After that I sewed it in with the actual machine and I was done!!!

Portfolio Class 11/21
Today we went into one of the studios at RISD to work on something called figure drawing. This is when in the center of the room there is a model and we have to draw them (their figure) in ink with different tools. Our professor would time us with each tool. So first we used the brush , then a bigger brush, then a bamboo pen. With each tool would be a different pose, and we had to switch the page. We then had to use more than one tool and we had longer time to work on it. This was one of my favorite projects!

I think I did like 20 or more and these are some that were pretty good. The more we did the more I got used to it and the better I got.

STP: Week 1
This week I started the top part of the dress.
1. first had to measure myself.
2. Then my mentor helped me sketch out the idea of the top on the muslin. That became our pattern. We then cut out the muslin and laid it on me. From there we figure where the notches had to be.
*muslin is a cheaper cotton fabric *notches help make thing more adjusted

3. We then marked where the notches were going to be and we laid it down on the black satin fabric. On the satin we I also marked the We pinned it down and then cut! The back is just going to be straight so we cut that out too.

4. I used the muslin that was the shape of the top to cut out lining. I then pinned the lining and the actual fabric together and sewed.
5. I matched up the notches and sewed them together
6. I tired it on again and made sure the notches were right but one of them was off. So what I did was unsew it and match it up again.
That was all I got done this week. Next week I hope to finish up the notches and attach the back and hopefully start the bottom!

Senior Thesis Project
My Senior Thesis Project (STP) is to make myself a prom dress and make a handbook on useful sewing tips. This is every much close to my interest since I want to study fashion design. For my dress I will design, and cut out my own pattern. I will be giving back by doing a 1 on 1 lesson with a student. I will be donating the pattern I made together with the handbook to The Met.
The first pictures is the actual monkey skull and the final charcoal piece. The second picture is a piece I started because I had extra time but of course it is not finished.
